Many people have often asked me the meaning of this title. It doesn't mean to ask for a standing ovation but rather to evoke the memories of the golden era of moviegoing. It recalls the time when, if you wanted to go in when the show had already started and there were no more free seats, there would be a sign lit over the ticket office which said PLATEA IN PIEDI or STANDING ROOM ONLY. Unfortunately, such signs are today, with few exceptions, but a memory.
The series starts with the birth of Neorealism, a period that witnessed an increasing number of movie-goers due to the great improvement of Italian movies. The three volumes, that cover a period of 34 years (1945-1978), are intended as a tribute and thanks to all those who, with dedication and creativity, made Italian films known and appreciated all over the world.
